Patrick Hamilton
Patrick Hamilton started his career as a photographer with The Toowoomba Chronicle after graduating from Downlands College, Toowoomba as a casual darkroom assistant. This soon turned into assignments as a photographer for the following 12 months before he moved to Brisbane to study at The Queensland College of Art to study an Associate Diploma in Applied Photography in 1987.
During his studies, he worked as a casual for Express suburban newspapers & rival Quest Newspaper's owned by News Limited.
In October 1987, Patrick officially started his full-time career with News Limited as a cadet with The Brisbane Telegraph, which closed in early 1988, and Patrick was transferred across to The Brisbane Courier Mail to complete his cadetship.
In early 1990 Patrick accepted a position with The Australian Newspaper in Sydney, which included coverage of the 1992 Royal Tour of Australia for all News Limited papers.
In 1993, Patrick then transferred back to Brisbane for love, to work from the Brisbane Bureau of The Australian.
During his time as a senior photographer, Patrick was very active in the local media community, servicing on the Queensland branch council & encouraging emerging student photographers whilst lecturing at Griffith University.
In 1998 Patrick covered the Papua New Guinea Tsunami in which he was awarded the 1998 Best Feature Photograph Walkley.
In 2002 he was also awarded The Most Outstanding Contribution To Journalism Award, the first photographer to be awarded this most prestigious award.
In June 2009 his career with News Ltd came to an end following 21.8 years of service to the company & he will continue his career as a freelance.
