Marie Blanch
Marie Blanch, who has left the Sunday Mail, is one of those journalists who were born to the craft. From a family of journalists, she couldn't wait to get into the business, starting out as a copytaker at the Sunday Sun when she was just 17, a job which she used to keep body and soul together during her three years studying for a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Queensland.
During this time she volunteered (foundation production teamster) on 4ZZZ's Radio Times, and after graduating ran the typesetting service for the University of Queensland Union.
This first serviced the student newspaper Semper, and then the magazine Time Off, which was subsequently taken off-campus and is Queensland's longest-running street magazine.
In 1984, Marie began a cadetship at The Sydney Morning Herald (entertainment, general, courts) and moved on to ABC radio, where she worked on the NSW and national news desks as well has becoming the breakfast news journalist/presenter on 2JJJ.
From there, parenthood took her to the Toowoomba Chronicle, where she spent five years as a sub-editor, and then to The Sunday Mail in Brisbane.
At the Sunday Mail she was a member of the general subs desk, rising to check sub, after a seven-year stint in the sections, five as entertainment editor (Encore).
Marie's father, Ken, was a well-known journalist on just about all of Brisbane's newspapers, both existing and defunct, from the early '50s until the late '90s. He is a lifetime member and gold honour badge holder for his work (stints as president and secretary) with the Australian Journalists Association, now the Alliance.
